Chapter Seventeen

Breakfast is most definitely not the most important meal of the day when you’re a vampire, and I’m not sure why, but this is the thought that continuously runs through my mind the whole time we eat. Meanwhile, my brother drills Miles with question after question about where he grew up, why he doesn’t attend school here, what type of hair gel he uses… basically he interrogates him about everything under the sun. Miles answers them in stride, though, and mostly embarrasses my brother by being a model citizen and saying nothing to implicate himself. This isn’t his first time dodging nosy humans, that is for sure.

When the pancakes are all gone and the bacon sits cold on the plate, my mother gets busy putting everything away and I offer to walk Miles out to his truck, which I'm assuming Vira and Vanesa drove back home since he pauses in the yard, looking into the distance, and shakes his head.

I watch him, studying his movements, fluid and sure, imagining how anyone could be so confident in their next step when I’m avidly praying mine doesn’t falter and knock me on my face. “So…”

“So?” He laughs, a knowing look in his expression. With a vampire, you’d think there would always be something to talk about, yet I find myself struggling to make simple conversation.

I finger my shorts uncertainly, hooking them through the tiny, material brand logos on the rims, moving the fabric so it stretches away from my thighs. “What actually happened last night?”

He breathes out heavily, resting against what must be his favorite tree in our yard. “The hunter… he lured me out. He must have known I’d recognize his smell from—”

Miles stops abruptly, a dark shadow falling over his face as his chin drops. The clouds do nothing to shield us from the heat, and we’re left baking in yet another hot summer day.

“From?” I prod, suddenly tired of all the unanswered questions nagging at my mind.

“My sister.” He adjusts the sleeves of his black shirt and looks into the trees as if they hold the answers to all the questions he has. I study his posture, sure and confident, yet still relaxed despite practically coming back from the dead not long ago. The cloudy sky parts and an orange glimmer of sunlight catches on his jawline, enhancing the clench he’s using to grind his teeth. Whatever he’s about to say, isn’t coming out willingly. “She died about a year ago. In your house.”

My poor little shit shack at the end of Cove Street has fallen victim to two murders? That must be some seriously awful karma.

My stomach churns, filling me with nausea that reminds me who currently lives there. Me. My family. If we’re living in the smack dab middle of Murder Manor then I’d sure as hell rather get out now than later. It’s like my broken-down home is an allurement for the peculiar.

“I didn’t realize you had another sister.”

He doesn’t seem at all surprised at
